Risk areas addressed
Who it applies to
Any organisation that provides or uses AI and wants a certifiable management-system approach to responsible AI.
Penalties & enforcement
None (voluntary, certifiable standard).
Enforced by: ISO/IEC (certification via accredited bodies)
ISO/IEC 42001 carries no direct penalty today, so its value is evidential: teams adopt it to show a named standard behind their controls for governance & accountability, safety & robustness and transparency. Mapping an existing AI inventory against it is usually enough to surface the gaps, and that same evidence tends to carry over to the binding regimes that follow.
